Nova, Sumer Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand TĀMAKI MAKAURAU - May 31 - June 24, 2023
Sumer is pleased to present Nova, the inaugural exhibition at its new location in Ta maki Makaurau. The first exhibition offers a snapshot of the gallery program, both recent and forthcoming. An energetic bringing-together of work by multiple artists: some already associated with the gallery, while others will be names less familiar. And though the show has no prescriptive theme, it is a selection of work that possesses a radiance and newness suggested by the title. Nova has a deliberate focus upon presenting younger and lesser-known artists, with the understanding that the gallery, as the city’s newest addition, will be equally new to many.
Nova includes new and recent works by Sandra Bushby, Xin Cheng, Hikalu Clarke, Ruth Cleland, Eleanor Cooper, Henry Curchod, Tjalling de Vries, Miles Hendricks, Yolunda Hickman, Jesse Hogan, Cindy Huang, Matthew Galloway, Lara Merrett, Michael Morley, Martyn Reynolds, James Oram, Sam Rountree Williams, Huseyin Sami, Bronte Stolz, Ella Sutherland, Zina Swanson, Ava Trevella, Jan van der Ploeg, August Ward, and Anto Yeldezian.

Expanded Canvas, Town Hall Gallery Boroondara, Melbourne, Australia
‘Expanded Canvas’ is a major exhibition at Town Hall Gallery exploring the dynamic and innovative nature of contemporary painting.
The traditional grid and two-dimensional picture planes are replaced by modern surfaces, including drop sheets, sign vinyl, virtual space, and the gallery wall itself. Colour spills, splatters, pools and stretches through the gallery space, in artworks that challenge possibilities of scale, form, colour and gesture. Pigment and brushwork are combined with elements from design, sculpture, animation and textiles to create vibrant and unexpected three-dimensional, virtual and ephemeral artworks.
Featuring: David Harley, Lara Merrett, Judy Millar, Tom Polo, Bundit Puangthong and Huseyin Sami. Click the link for more information Expanded Canvas

A Vacant Space, Artbank Gallery, Sydney, Australia - Group Exhibition
A Vacant Space is an outcome of Artbank’s emerging curators program and brings together a diverse range of artworks from the Artbank collection, as well as select number of loans that capture the palpable moments surrounding an action or event. We are told that actions speak louder than words, but what about that moment before an action, or the time that immediately follows? Gestures have the ability to shift time, to bend it, leaving a gap, an aching space in their wake. Artists have long used movements, actions and gestures in their work to bend time and space, and to highlight the way in which bodies relate to the environment around them. A Vacant Space is an outcome of Artbank’s emerging curators program and draws on the Artbank collection, in addition to a number of select loans, to explore how actions are captured by artists, and how they use these moments to question our place in the world.
Artists include: Ian W. Abdulla, Kim Buck, Janet Burchill & Jennifer McCamley, Olive Cotton, Bridget & Alison Currie, Cherine Fahd, Rebecca Ann Hobbs, Honey Long & Prue Stent, Kate Mitchell, Nicole Monks, Clare Rae, Kirion Robinson, Huseyin Sami, Simone Slee, Salote Tawale and Hossein Valamanesh.

4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, Sydney, Australia - Group exhibition
Equal Area: Lee Kun-Yong
Lee Kun-Yong – one of Korea’s most influential conceptual artists – is known for performances that explore the connection between the human psyche and the gestures of the body. This exhibition, Equal Area, features photographic documentation of Kun-Yong’s performances from his close-to six-decade career. It also includes four performances and live interventions by Australian artists over the five weeks of the exhibition.
Many of Kun-Yong's performances incorporate acts of repetition to test the relationship between logic and actions. Australian artists Huesyin Sami, Daniel Von Sturmer and Emily Parsons-Lord build on this idea to present their own works and performances in collaboration with Kun-Yong’s work.

Shut Up and Paint
Participating in Shut Up and Paint an exhibition that celebrates and examines contemporary painting.
Drawn from the NGV Collection, Shut Up and Paint includes significant international painters, and a number of Australian artists, whose work can be seen to lay the recent groundwork of transformations within the discipline. Shown in dialogue with these well-known practitioners is a significant display of recently acquired works, many never before seen in Australia. A number of these recent works test the boundaries of what might be considered painting today, as artists explore a more fluid relationship between it and other forms of art making, and reconsider painting’s place in a contemporary world.

Each curator will develop a theme and share the same five artists to work with them in developing and presenting their exhibitions. The Curators will not correspond with each other about the exhibition nor will the artists discuss the comparative approaches and themes that each curator is exploring. This show will present challenges to curators, artists and audience alike. Co-ordinated and conceived by Jan Duffy
